Seaboard Foods to donate portion of March pork loin sales to Japan earthquake and tsunami relief
Seaboard Foods announced today the company will donate a portion of March pork loin sales up to $50,000 to the Japanese Red Cross for relief programs following the Japan earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan.
(March 24, 2011) — Seaboard Foods announced today the company will donate a portion of March pork loin sales up to $50,000 to the Japanese Red Cross for relief programs following the Japan earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
In addition, Seaboard Foods pledged participation in the U.S. Meat Export Federation Japan Relief Program to donate pork products in upcoming months that will address the long-term needs of feeding Japanese families, and will double match employee donations to Japan relief efforts through the Seaboard Matching Gift Program.
“Since this devastating natural disaster, our concerns have been for the safety and well-being of our Japanese business partners and their families,” says Rod Brenneman, Seaboard Foods president and CEO. “We recognize they will face many challenges ahead and we’re hopeful our support will assist in meeting the current and upcoming needs of our Japanese friends.”
Japan imports about 1 billion pounds of U.S. pork annually and Seaboard Foods, an integrated U.S. food company, is a leading exporter of U.S. pork to the country under the Seaboard Farms® and St. Joe Pork™ brands.
Brenneman says, “Our Japanese customers have contributed significantly to the success of Seaboard Foods. We want to show our respect and concern for the fine people of Japan by offering financial support and pork products for relief efforts as they recover from the unimaginable devastation to their country.”
To encourage individual donations, Brenneman announced Seaboard will match every one dollar Seaboard employees donate with two dollars to relief efforts through the Seaboard Matching Gift Program in addition to the company’s portion of March pork loin sales and pledge of pork products.
Seaboard Foods, with headquarters in Shawnee Mission, Kan., is a leading integrated food company and a top exporter of pork to Japan and Mexico.
